Part One
For the New Guard babies out there, some helpful hints.
Things I never leave my home without when I have to go to anything guard related.
1. I suggest you buy stock in bobby pins. You need them for EVERYTHING. I normally get the giant pack of them that comes in a plastic container, but I also keep some on my gloves along with Safety pins, keeping some in/on all of your bags is extremely helpful, not to mention their is always that one girl that never has them.
2. Electrical tape is your best friend. Nuff said.
3. Guard is Dangerous. You will get hurt at one point. Best thing to do is to suck it up and get stronger, for yourself and your team. So getting band aids, and ace bandages is a good idea. Also having a little first aid kit in your guard bag with some ontiment/wipes/meds is a must have.
4. If your guard instructor lets/makes you wear socks on the winter guard floor, buying more is going to happen. The floor is going to rip up your socks like paper.
5. You’re going to be buying gloves at some point but you might want to think about investing in a nice pair. Gloves are going to rip, smell, and get really dirty. Ever-dri is a nice brand and most DCI corps use them which says a lot because those guys take a beating.
6. Keep your own can of hair spray. It’ll say you much needed time in the long run.
7. You are going to feel really nasty after performances. Most shows have really elaborate make-up so keep face wipes handy. Wipes are better because they are easier to use and don’t make as much mess.
8. Your body is going to take some time to get used to it all, don’t give up, you’ll get there. Blisters and bruises happen on your feet more than anything else. Foot undies are really helpful. If you get the cheap kind they won’t last long but they will help you have grip on the floor and give you more comfort with dance.
Good luck guys
